The other day I got my students to sit down and write their honest thoughts about poetry.  I even made it clear that they could be as expressive as they wanted to be without the use of any official swear words.  The responses were creative, but they were all pretty similar.  To sum up their opinions in one word, they thought poetry “SUCKS”.  Of course, I will be teaching an LES on poetry in the next month. I thought some ideas expressed in this article may help my seemingly impossible task to change my students’ conception of poetry.
